The word retard is often used to describe something that is wrong or malfunctioning. It has nothing to do with people with disabilities, because there is no obligations for humans to work in a certain way even if the standards claim this. But words are powerful. Hearing the r-word makes people with intellectual disabilities, and people who love them, feel like less valued members of humanity, and even if most people know that the r-word is demeaning and offensive it has become one of the most natural ingredients of popular culture.
People living with disabilities are tired of being associated with real idiots. So we started the Instagram account @saidbyretards as a statement and game changer for equality. By quoting some of the most stupid and idiotic things said by powerful people around the world, packed as classic cheesy inspirational qoutes, we raise the question from a new perspective. Who’s the real retards in this world?
The members of GIL are the actors in the movies, which makes Said by Retards unique and authentic.
As an extension of the campaign, we also created a special beer available to order at bars and buy in stores.
We quickly got lots of love and support from people from all over the world. And in just a few days @saidbyretards started to appear in news articles, radio interviews and blogs. It was discussed in podcasts, debate articles and other forums. Not to mention a massive amount of shared articles in social media.
Remember; We have only just begun. The source of real idiocy is almost infinite.
